Safe-Li
Safe-Li’s patented technology makes lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries fire-safe. The groundbreaking technology is poised to accelerate the electrification transition, advancing climate healing.
How It Works
Safe-Li’s technology replaces batteries’ flammable materials with a non-flammable electrolyte and separator, all while maintaining battery performance. It addresses fire safety issues directly at the material and battery design level. The breakthrough technology received a Shell Energy GameChanger grant and is months away from commercialization.

Planetary Benefit
As the world speeds toward electrification to combat climate change, Safe-Li will improve the safety, reliability, and performance of battery and energy storage that powers everything from utility grids and laptops to electric vehicles. The World Economic Forum highlighted that the way the world produces and consumers electricity is changing rapidly. Consumers are experiencing the electrification of energy across all sectors - transportation, residential, commercial and industrial. Grid batteries and micro-grids will provide the bridge between the production and consumption of electricity, but successful adoption requires reliable, safe battery technology.
A Better, Safer Lithium-ion Battery
The number of lithium-ion battery-based fires is growing with enormous frequency both in the United States and internationally. In 2022, the New York City Fire Department responded to more than 200 e-scooter and e-bike fires, which resulted in six fatalities.
“In all of these fires, these lithium-ion fires, it is not a slow burn; there’s not a small amount of fire, it literally explodes,” said FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh told. “It’s a tremendous volume of fire as soon as it happens, and it’s very difficult to extinguish and so it’s particularly dangerous.”
Applications
Lithium-ion and Lithium-metal batteries
Lithium-ion batteries, used in everyday products from toys to computers, power tools, electric vehicles and grid-powered systems, are the primary source of electrification. Billions have been invested in the technology and in its production, yet the batteries’ top problem – thermal runaway and the resulting fires and explosions – have yet to be solved. Lithium-ion battery fires are almost a daily occurance, raising red flags for fire departments worldwide.
This is where Safe-Li’s technology comes in. Safe-Li’s inorganic membrane and non-flammable electrolyte solve fire related issues by removing flammable materials from the core battery design. The technology is designed to seamlessly integrate into existing battery manufacturing workflow making it a relatively easy upgrade. The technology can also be applied to lithium-metal batteries.
